Common Oral Sores

Oral sores or ulcers are a painful condition that causes discomfort in daily life. However, they mostly heal within 1-2 weeks. Common types of sores are canker sores, cold sores, and sores that are caused by dentures.

Canker Sores are painful ulcers usually present on cheeks, lips or tongue that form inside the mouth—on the cheeks, lips, or tongue. They have a yellow center surrounded by a red halo. It can be caused by accidental bites, vitamin deficiency, family history, and digestive problems. They usually heal themselves, but visiting a dentist can save you from future consequences.

Cold Sores seem like blisters on the lips or around the nose. They are caused by the herpes virus. Signs and symptoms include itching or tingling. They are usually triggered by stress, illness, or sun exposure. It's a contagious disease; therefore, practicing good hygiene is crucial. A dentist can suggest medications to relieve symptoms.

Denture-related sores are usually caused by poorly fitting dentures or improper care. It presents as red, irritated areas on the palate. Denture wearers must clean dentures properly, brush their mouth daily, and take them out at night to prevent themselves from denture-related sores.
