Dental Erosion
Tooth enamel is the outer, hard, white layer of the tooth. Below the enamel lies a sensitive layer called dentin, protected by the enamel. Dental Erosion is the wearing off of enamel due to acid exposure. If enamel is gone, it cannot grow back. This is the reason we should take care of our teeth, not only from sugary and sticky food but also from frequent acidic intake.
Causes of Dental Erosion
It is usually caused by acidic foods and drinks, for example, soda, sports drinks, and sour candies. GERD patients who have frequent acid reflux can have this problem. It can also be caused by frequent vomiting due to bulimia, pregnancy, and illness
Signs & symptoms
Yellowing or discoloration of teeth, or shortened or worn-out front teeth. It can also cause tooth sensitivity.
How to Prevent
Go for regular dental checkups and limit the use of soda and snacking. Use a straw with acidic drinks. Always rinse with water after vomiting or acid reflux. Add milk or plain yogurt to your diet. Wait 30–60 minutes to brush after acid exposure
