In the article by Firmino et al. (2017) of the Journal of the American Dental Association, the authors discuss how oral health literacy (OHL) affects oral health diseases, through showing how much an individual understands about oral health impacts the development and the treatment of oral diseases. The authors searched eight databases, covering studies that looked at oral health and measured OHL using acceptable methods, up to October 2016. Ten studies were included even though six of them showed a high possible bias. Dental caries and periodontal status were the most common oral health problems investigated by five separate studies. These studies suggest that lower levels of oral health happened to be associated with more primary tooth decay. Lower OHL was also reported among people with fewer teeth and less tight-fitting dentures. On the other hand, deep periodontal pockets (bleeding on probing), the severity of periodontitis, a patient’s dental extraction history, type of dental treatment required, and dental plaque all showed no clear relationship. Problems like trouble with the temporomandibular joint and lesions in the mouth were infrequently mentioned. There was found to be a limited relationship between low OHL and dental caries in primary teeth. Yet, due to a big risk of bias and the fact that different studies differ a lot, the situation is still unclear for other oral conditions. Authors broadly agreed that stronger research is required to learn more about the impact of OHL on oral health outcomes.
